Resplendent in its jewel toned colors, the exquisite long tail feathers were once used as currency in ancient Mayan cultures; in fact, “quetzal” was a term for “feathers” in the Mayan language, and is the current term for Guatemalan currency.

Savegre Mountain Lodge at San Gerardo de Dota is the quintessential Costa Rica mountain retreat. Tucked into the Savegre River Valley of the Tallamanca Mountains, it features stone, wood, floor-to-ceiling windows and ceramic tiles throughout; the lodge captures the surrounding isolation and nature of its environment.
Situated in the heart of the Los Santos Forest Reserve, approximately an hour and half outside off San José, this pleasant mountain lodge offers eight bungalows; cozy, yet with modern clean lines, each distinctive space offers hard wood floors, a unique design and floor to ceiling windows that bring the forest in. Each bungalow consists of one or two bedrooms with private bath and terrace. Bungalows for four guests have a room with a fully-equipped kitchen.
