San Jose & Central Valley

The Central Valley of Costa Rica is host to the capital of San Jose; a wonderful place to start your Costa Rica journey.

Strategically located in the central valley of the country, San José is Costa Rica’s capital and is host to the country’s biggest population concentration (approximately two-thirds).

The Central Valley elevates to an average altitude of 1,100 meters, and it is here where four of the biggest cities in Costa Rica converge: Cartago, Alajuela, Heredia and San José. This region is mainly characterized by the imposing green mountains that encircle it, the colloquial scenery of its surrounding semi-rural villages, its coffee plantations, its volcanoes (Poas, Irazú and Barva) and of course, San José’s cosmopolitan character exhibited in its cultural, gastronomical and entertainment offer.

The Central Valley is also the arriving point for visitors who fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport and as such, it is an ideal home base to visit multiple attractions found within relatively short distances from the capital.
